The square root of two is what made this spiral possible, because that is the ratio of the sides of the rectangles, one to the square root of two. And that has a fascinating property, that if you shrink one of these rectangles to half its size, it still has the same ratio. And so on until the rectangle is too small to see. And thus this logarithmic spiral is born. Math geeks think this is cool.
