Summer work

This of course is only paid a pittance because Harry has to stay at Marge's place in order to look after the dogs, and she considers that his room and board (plus a pittance) is generous enough.

Harry doesn't mind at all, because

  • it gets him away from the Dursleys
  • a pittance is still a lot more than zero
  • he gets to learn about dogs
  • Aunt Marge may be a strict taskmaster, but she isn't unreasonable

Also, this is probably going to partly be the time when Aunt Marge goes away on her summer holidays, so part of the time it will just be Harry and Colonel Fubster.

Good at Care of Magical Creatures

Not that that's particularly relevant, since that doesn't happen until Third Year. But it would give him something in common with Hagrid before then.

Meets Luna Lovegood
Arrow Link

This depends on whether Aunt Marge's place "in the country" could reasonably be expected to be near where the Lovegoods live.

http://www.hp-lexicon.org/wizards/luna.html

Home: A "great black cylinder" that "looks like a giant rook" on the top of a hill a several miles to the north of the village of Ottery St. Catchpole, where the Weasley family lives at The Burrow.

Mother: Unnamed witch who died c. 1990, when Luna was nine years old.  (I wonder if Harry could save Luna's mother's life, as he did in "Luna's Hubby"?)

So the Lovegoods actually live near the Weasleys, do they?  I wonder where Ottery St. Catchpole is.

http://www.hp-lexicon.org/atlas/gazetteer/gazetteer-o.html#ottery_st_catchpole

A small town along the River Otter in Devon, near Exeter. Ottery St. Catchpole is a Muggle town but has historically also been a large settlement for wizarding families (DH16), including the Weasleys (GF6).

Library

This would have to be a public library; British primary schools tend not to have libraries with librarians.

It might be a Carnegie library (built with a grant from Andrew Carnegie).

Unexpected help from Aunt Marge
Arrow Link Arrow Link Arrow Link

She could argue that it would keep Harry out of mischief, that their granddad taught himself his letters (or something like that) and there's nothing wrong with trying to better yourself. In a very insulting way, of course.
